Ms Hammond admitted in her 2021 autobiography that she had gastric band surgery after a “terrible” moment during an interview with Matt Damon in 2007.

“Halfway through the interview something awful and embarrassing happened,” the former Strictly star wrote.

‘My height and weight were against me and suddenly the side of the chair broke.

“I was terrified,” she continued. ‘I wanted the world to swallow me up.

“Are you okay?” he asked. He was very nice about it. “Let’s get you another chair.” I’m a black woman, but I turned bright red in the face.

“Don’t worry,” I said, ripping the arm off the chair and throwing it on the floor.

‘That made him laugh and instead of bursting into tears, which would have been normal, I started laughing too and we continued with the interview.’

It was then that she decided to have the surgery because she “didn’t want to be fat anymore.”

However, after the surgery, she developed complications and “couldn’t keep anything down,” and after two years she decided to reverse the procedure.

The star recalled: ‘It was really disturbing. I felt like my body was rejecting the foreign entity inside me and I started to get sick.

“It normally takes 15 minutes to remove a gastric band, but with my surgeon it took an hour and a half because the scar tissue had grown so thick around mine that it was squeezing my stomach so much that I couldn’t eat anything,” she added to.

“That’s why I was always sick.”

She confessed that an incident where she felt uncomfortable on a plane made her want to take control of her weight.

At her heaviest, the Brummie presenter said she weighed almost 28 stone.
