High school teacher divides Aussies after revealing his surprising salary: ‘There’s no way’

A high school teacher has divided Aussies after revealing his eye-watering salary.

The Melbourne man revealed he earns ‘just over $160,000’ a year teaching drama to high school students after 27 years in the industry.

He said the job had many benefits, including long vacations.

‘I started as an actor and then ended up in education. The workload isn’t too bad, I’m on vacation right now,” he said in a video shared on TikTok.

‘But it’s definitely worth it. I would encourage everyone to look into it. For all actors, drama education is the best there is.

‘You get to practice your profession every day and you learn the future of actors.’

Despite his passion for the profession, many were left in disbelief as to how a drama teacher could make so much money.

“That’s not possible,” someone commented.

Others wondered how they could earn the same amount.

‘I have been teaching for 24 years [in Queensland] and I’m nowhere near that!’ a second commented.

“I’m in the wrong profession,” said a third.

Some claimed teachers had been “overpaid,” while others said the amount made sense.

‘In state schools, teaching wages are based on the number of years you have taught. This is completely reasonable for someone who has been teaching for 27 years,” one person said.

The average salary for a teacher in Australia ranges from $95,000 to $105,000, according to search platform SEEK.
