Grim discovery after house fire in Saint Albans as body is found among the rubble

A body has been found in a Melbourne home after a fire ripped through the building early Sunday.

Emergency services were called to the Power Street house in Saint Albans at 2.40am to find the single-storey weatherboard house had been consumed by fire and an adjacent three-storey apartment building was threatened.

Residents of nearby properties were evacuated as 30 firefighters fought for 50 minutes to extinguish the blaze.

One person was found deceased in the house, but emergency services did not yet release any details about the person.

A crime scene has been cordoned off and an arson chemist will arrive at the scene later today.

The adjacent building was heavily affected by smoke, with three of the townhouses suffering minor fire damage. The police are helping a number of residents with alternative housing.
