Google could soon make sharing files from Android to iPhone much easier
- Quick Share could be coming to iOS and macOS soon
- It enables fast file transfer between devices
- Alternative third-party tools are already available
Quick Share on Android is the equivalent of AirDrop, making it easy to transfer files between Android devices, Chromebooks and Windows – and there are signs that Google plans to add support for iPhones, iPads and Macs.
As noted by the team at Android Authoritya comment from a Google engineer about code essential to Quick Share specifically mentions iOS and macOS – a comment that would make more sense if an app for these platforms was in the works.
These aren’t the biggest hints, but something could be going on. There is already an official Quick share for Windows app, so it’s not too much of a stretch to imagine Google rolling out additional apps for Apple devices in the same way.
There’s no official word from Google on this yet, but we’ll let you know if that changes. Quick Share was originally called Near Share and after its beta release in 2020, it is now available on most Android phones and tablets.
It’s good to share
Of course, Apple wouldn’t build something like this into its own software, so iPhone, iPad and Mac owners would have to download a separate app to make this work – which could be a stumbling block.
However, users with an Android phone who also use an iPad or Mac, for example, would most likely be happy to download and install another app if it meant seamless file sharing between all their devices.
As indicated above 9to5GoogleThere are already third-party tools available to do the same job. However, an official option from Google would likely provide a more convenient and seamless experience (like Google’s tools for switch to iOS).
You may recall that earlier this year, Google and Samsung both combined sharing protocols to improve file transfers between Pixel phones and Galaxy phones – and iPhones could be next on the list.
