James Martin reveals the unseen struggle he encounters on his ITV show due to hidden health battle

James Martin has opened up about the invisible battle he faces while filming his ITV cooking show due to a health battle.

The TV chef, 52, has been a familiar face on screens for more than 30 years. He was known for fronting Saturday Kitchen before hosting his current show, James Martin’s Saturday Morning.

But while the show has been a huge success, James recently revealed that viewers are unaware of the hidden challenges he faces in creating the hit programme.

The star recently joined Lose Women’s Kaye Adams on her show on BBC Radio Scotland, talking about how she was ‘fascinated’ by James’ ability to cook and entertain his celebrity guests at the same time, likening the skill to ‘ choreography’.

However, James then admitted it wasn’t as easy as it seems as his ‘severe’ dyslexia makes things ‘really difficult’, reports The Express.

Laughing in response to Kaye’s praise, James shared, “I’m watching you do your thing while I’m listening to music and you’re like a conductor.” I can’t do what you do and I certainly can’t do it if I’ve been to Loose Women with you.

“I certainly admire anyone who is able to do that.”

Opening up about his on-screen struggles, he continued: “Strangely enough, I can cook and talk at the same time, but I still find presenting very difficult.

‘I’m severely dyslexic, so reading everything from a teleprompter is very hard work, so when I get to cook and chat, I feel at home there.’

James has previously spoken about his dyslexia, revealing that he wasn’t diagnosed until he was 30, after struggling for years.

During his show earlier this year, James revealed the secret way he overcame his struggles while filming the cooking show.

Speaking to newsreader Lucrezia Millarini, he said: ‘Well, just as you read, I am severely dyslexic. I have a wonderful wife named Sam, Sam [on the] autocue, which puts things in larger letters for me, so that I can read them clearly.’

The TV chef previously underwent surgery to remove facial cancer after his initial diagnosis in 2018.

Lorraine asked if he was feeling well during the star’s appearance in April, to which the chef replied: “Yes, the stitches fell out, as you know, last time I was on I was in the middle of operations .

“Right now, the stitches have fallen out of my body and that’s clear, further and higher!”

James first made his battle with cancer public last year when his foul-mouthed rant to his TV crew was exposed by an extraordinary leaked tape recorded shortly after his diagnosis.

The TV star slammed the crew working on his food show James Martin’s Spanish Adventure, with the extraordinary tape leaked to The Sun.

He told the newspaper that the outburst was the culmination of a series of unfortunate events in his life, which began with the death of his grandfather, followed by a home invasion by masked burglars and ultimately a cancer diagnosis.

He said: ‘Then I was diagnosed with cancer in my face and had to have surgery, which I wasn’t able to do until two days before Christmas when we finished filming. Since then it has returned several times and I require regular treatment.’
