Jude Bellingham’s mentality is what sets the Borussia Dortmund midfielder apart from his peers, according to Pep Guardiola.

Manchester City are in Germany on Tuesday and require a draw to secure the top spot in the Champions League group stage, but expect a tough test at the feverish Westfalen stadium.

Bellingham, 19, captained the squad for the first time earlier this month and has consistently shone for club and country since leaving Birmingham City two years ago.

“When he was 17, I noticed it wasn’t just the quality – it was the screaming, kicking, going to the referee,” Guardiola said.

“This man has the mentality. He is already one of the captains of the team, which is quite impressive. It’s about the whole package. He is already on the national team. We know the quality he has.’

Bellingham was arguably the man of the match as City defeated Dortmund at the Etihad Stadium earlier in the season and scored twice in the weekend’s 5-0 win over Stuttgart. His manager, Edin Terzic, believes he is wise beyond his age.

“I think he’s the oldest 19-year-old I’ve ever seen,” Terzic said. “Not only do we benefit from him, but Dortmund is also the right step for him in his development.

“Jude will not only have a big impact tomorrow and for the rest of the season, he will have a big impact for us, but also for the England national team in the years to come.

“I have been fortunate enough to work with Declan Rice at West Ham and I think they are both very talented and will dominate English football in midfield positions for the next decade.”
