A Scary Movie reboot is in the works, but you won’t be able to stream it on Paramount Plus anytime soon
For the first time in almost two decades, it is confirmed that the Wayans brothers will reunite for a new installment of their film Scary movie franchise, but production isn’t expected to begin until next year, so you’ll instead have to stream the first four films on Paramount Plus in the US for Halloween 2024. The filmmaker brothers (Marlon, Shawn and Keenen Wayans) will team up to create a to develop a new scenario for their first Scary movie film since they left the franchise after the release of Scary movie 3 (2006).
CinemaCon announced this there was a new scary movie in the making in April, but only now are details about the production emerging. Marlon Wayans took to Instagram (see below) to announce the reboot of the film franchise, which he developed with his brothers in 2000. In addition to announcing the comeback on social media, the brothers shared that “(they) couldn’t be more excited to be part of the new Scary Movie and working with each other again” in a recent statement.
The film franchise began in the early 00s and gained massive attention for its comedic elements and parody references to horror films such as Scream (1996), my favorite slasher film, The exorcist (1973), I know what you did last summer (1997) and To draw (2002), which I recently checked off my sci-fi horror movie watchlist.
As of now, there are a total of five films in the franchise, the most recent being Scary movie 5 (2013), therefore we can only guess that the reboot will happen Scary movie 6. The first four films featured recurring characters Cindy (Anna Faris) and Brenda (Regina Hall), and while casting is another question, I have my fingers crossed that the comedy golden duo will return.
Which horror films are being spoofed this time?
Since the last one Scary movie insert was released just over 10 years ago. It’s been a very powerful decade for the best horror films, so there’s plenty of material for the Wayans brothers to work with for the reboot. Although the film is still very early in development and we don’t know who will star or what the film will entail, I decided to make it a fun guessing game.
That goes without saying Go away (2017) is one of the biggest horror films of recent years, and director Jordan Peele has contributed his fresh and original take on the genre with other films. Us (2019) and No (2022), all of which provide a strong basis for a parody.
Like Peele, Ari Aster’s interpretation of psychological horror films has made his works modern classics Heir (2018) and Midsummer (2017). While both films are dark and gruesome in their own right, I’m confident there’s enough quirkiness in them that could be appropriated for a parody film. In other words, I want a silly and comedic recreation of Toni Collette’s ceiling-mounted headbang moment Heir.
