It’s a habit many of us are guilty of, but Dr. Karl Kruszelnicki warns why you should never put your feet up on the coffee table.
The Australian scientist urged everyone to stop resting their feet on furniture after a disturbing study found traces of feces on the surface.
“Here’s the big question: ‘Should you put your feet on the coffee table?’ he said.
Dr. Karl explained that almost every pair of new shoes is covered in feces from animals and even from public bathrooms within 12 weeks of wearing them.
“If you get brand new shoes and wear them for three months… At the end of the three months, 93 percent will have fecal matter on the soles, a polite way of saying poop,” he said.
‘It comes from cat and dog feces when you walk through a park or happen to enter a public toilet.’
The doctor said feces, especially from cats, can lead to serious health problems, especially in pregnant women.
βCat feces can transmit Toxoplasmosis,β said Dr. Karl, explaining that it is an infection with a parasite called Toxoplasma gondii.

‘If a woman is pregnant and becomes infected with Toxoplasmosis for the first time, it can cause developmental problems in the baby.’
And it’s not just the outdoors you have to worry about.
Dr. Karl said stool can also come from your own toilet at home or from “babies who are very messy.”
In another study, Dr. Karl said researchers looked at a group of young men living in homes without women.
βIf you look at their coffee tables, 70 percent have fecal contamination,β he said.
“So here’s a PSA: probably don’t put feet on the coffee table.”
His video has been viewed more than 17,000 times, with many agreeing with Dr. Karl’s statement about the “nasty habit.”
While many said they always take off their shoes at the door.
“No shoes in the house… We think it’s weird and rude,” said one.
‘In our culture this is one of the reasons why we don’t wear shoes indoors. Sometimes it just makes sense,β said another.
‘I’m starting to think you’re following me. I think I do everything you say not to do,β one person added.
Meanwhile, someone joked: “So what you’re saying is – stay the fuck away from a bachelor pad – get it,” to which Dr Karl replied: “Not quite.”
