Then you hear Daniel’s character say to a friend, “It was a wise old queen who told me that I have a duty to live, to overcome hatred with knowledge, sincerity and love. The hardest part is convincing someone else that they are really a part of you.”

As he looks at Allerton in another scene, he says, “I’ve got bigger fish to fry.”

His friend replies, “Bigger fish are right, colder, smoother, harder to catch.”

In the trailer we then see William and Allerton spending time together at the cinema and on the beach before they appear to have sex and are also seen in bed.

Speaking about the love scenes in the film, Daniel said at the Venice Film Festival: “We just wanted to make it as moving, as real and natural as possible.”

Delegates at the film festival have said they are amazed by the sex scenes that have not yet been seen anywhere in a mainstream film.

Speaking on Tuesday, he said: ‘Drew (Starkey) is a great, fantastic, beautiful actor to work with and we laughed, we tried to make it fun.

‘There was some choreography in the film, which was a very important part of the film. Drew and I started rehearsing the dance months before filming. Dancing with someone is a great icebreaker.

“You know as well as I do that there’s nothing intimate about filming a sex scene on a movie set, but we just wanted to make it as moving, as real and natural as possible.”

Director Luca Guadagnino, behind the recent hit Challengers starring Zendaya, said: “Daniel in our first Zoom was convinced that this was going to be a love story first and foremost. That’s what we stayed with: what it means to love and be loved, to be connected and to be disconnected.’

He described Craig as ‘one of the greatest actors’, citing his ‘generosity of approach’ and adding: ‘He has the ability to be very mortal on screen, but very few are.

“There are very few iconic legendary actors who show that vulnerability and one of them is definitely Daniel.”

Guadagnino added that he had tried to create imaginary worlds when filming the unfinished novella, and included scenes in which the actors tried the hallucinogenic drug Ayahuasca.

Venice Film Festival boss Alberto Barbera said he believes Daniel gave “the performance of a lifetime” in Queer, adding he would be surprised if we don’t see the British actor at the Academy Awards next year to see.

It would be Craig’s first-ever Oscar nod.

Queer will be released in cinemas on November 27 in the US and December 13 in the UK.
