Bakery worker takes followers inside walk-in oven after Halifax Walmart tragedy: ‘There’s no emergency off-switch’

A bakery worker has provided insight into how walk-in ovens work amid intense speculation about how a teenage Walmart worker got stuck in them.

Gursimran Kaur, 19, tragically died in a walk-in oven in the bakery department of the Walmart store where she worked with her mother in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Her death caused widespread confusion about how she became trapped and led many people to reveal that they didn’t even know walk-in ovens existed.

Now an anonymous American woman has shared a series of clips TikTok illustrates how walk-in ovens work and takes her followers into the steel box.

She said the videos were not filmed at a Walmart and clarified that she does not know which specific brand of oven was involved in the tragedy.

But she did say that from her experience, most walk-in ovens have similar features.

‘There is no emergency shut-off switch in the ovens. There is an emergency release button on the inside of the door, but the button is metal and would be extremely hot to press,” she said.

“I’m not sure about other companies, but we set our ovens to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.”

At her shop, she said, “The oven doesn’t turn off when it’s opened, it stays on most of the day until we finish baking.”

The woman shared another video showing the oven’s shell, pushing in a large rack on wheels that could hold fifteen baking trays of pastries.

Even with the rack, there was still enough room for one person to step inside.

But the woman said there are few reasons why a worker would ever step inside, especially if the oven was already on.

“We wouldn’t clean the oven when it’s on. The only other reason we would step into the oven would be to pick up parchment paper off the floor,” she said.

It is still unclear how Gursimran Kaur got stuck in the oven.

A call first reported by DailyMail.com early this week revealed it involved a ‘female employee’ locked in an oven in the bakery.’

‘Oven is on. I’m not sure if the staff can turn it off,” the control room officer warned.

Kaur’s mother, who worked at Walmart with her daughter, made the disturbing discovery after frantically searching for Kaur in the store.

While the exact brand of the oven involved in the incident has not yet been revealed, other Walmart stores in the United States are known to have installed ovens like the one in the photo.

A colleague noticed ‘leakage’ coming from the walk-in oven.

“Imagine the horror her mother experienced – opening the oven herself,” a family spokesperson said in a speech. GoFundMe appeal.

“As you all know, her charred remains were found after a few hours in the bakery’s walk-in oven.”

Kaur’s mother is reportedly ‘traumatised’ by the discovery.

“The suffering of this family is unimaginable and indescribable,” the Maritime Sikh Society Executive said in the appeal.

Kaur is remembered as a “beautiful girl who came to Canada with big dreams.”

Walmart officials said in a statement ‘we are heartbroken and our deepest thoughts are with our associate and their family. We extend our sincere condolences to those closest to them.

‘We are also supporting our staff during this incredibly difficult time and have provided 24/7 virtual care and on-site support, including grief counselling.’

The staff scheduled this week will continue to be paid despite the store closures. The store will remain closed until further notice.
