Dave Hughes reveals why he was blindsided by Mel B’s engagement to Rory McPhee

Dave Hughes has revealed his shock at Mel B’s relationship as he talked about 2Day FMs Hughesy, Ed & Erin breakfast show on Monday.

The radio star, 51, recalled spending time with the couple while filming The Masked Singer, saying he had no idea they were a couple.

‘His name is Rory’ [McPhee] – he’s her confidante, her best friend and a man I met while Mel B was filming The Masked Singer this year,” he began.

“He was always in her dressing room. I often came in and hung out with Mel B.’

Erin Molan asked Dave if he believed the pair looked like a couple, but the radio star said he never saw a hint of it.

‘No, not that I saw. Maybe I didn’t look hard enough. I have to be honest – I didn’t know they were a couple,” he said.

“I thought Rory was her employee; that it was a professional relationship.’

Dave added that he was full of praise for McPhee saying he didn’t seem like an “ego” man, unlike her previous exes.

‘He is very measured; he’s not an ego man – I know her previous boyfriends were ego men,’ he added, saying he liked calmness.

The Spice Girl, 47, is said to be engaged to Rory after asking the question with a £100,000 diamond ring on Wednesday, according to The Sun.

The publication reports that he then held up a £100,000 ring consisting of a pear-shaped champagne-colored diamond set on a rose gold band.

An insider told the outlet that Mel immediately said ‘yes’, adding: “But it was incredibly emotional because after everything she’s been through, it was a really big moment for her.”

Another source told how Mel is ‘so happy’ with the engagement, adding: ‘It has taken a huge amount for a man to get her to trust him and believe in love again.
