Matty Healy makes sly dig at ex Taylor Swift as he says he’s ‘not interested’ in making music about ‘casual romantic liaisons’ after singer penned several songs about their brief relationship
Matty Healy appeared to throw shade at his ex-girlfriend Taylor Swift, saying he was ‘not interested’ in writing music about his ‘casual romantic liaisons’.
The 1975 singer, 35, briefly dated the pop superstar, 34, last year following her split from long-term boyfriend Joe Alwyn, but they split in June 2023.
But despite the brief relationship, Matty became the surprise focus on a number of songs on her latest album The Tortured Poets Department, which was released in April this year.
It is widely believed that Taylor takes aim at him in songs including The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived and Fortnight (feat. Post Malone), prompting renewed fan inquiry into the period in which they dated.
And Matty has now apparently taken a sly dig at the hitmaker’s frequent choice to write songs about her past romances, calling it such an “obvious thing to draw from” that he finds “not interesting” .

Appears on Joshua Citarella’s podcast Doomscroll Matty stated on Tuesday that he did not want to write about his affairs for which he has ‘become known’.
He said: “Last year I became a much more famous public figure for a lot of different reasons. The only reason I was interested in is what I was doing.
“So I think a lot of artists become very interested in their knowledge, or they become interested in the things that have happened outside of their art that people know about, and they want to address that, and fair enough.”
He continued, “Maybe on my first record, when it was very much a series of diary entries, like little bits of heartbreak, I wrote a lot more about relationships and things like that.
“But honestly, I’d just be lying if I made a record about, I don’t know, all the things that have been said about me or my casual romantic liaisons or whatever it is that I’ve become somewhat famous for. just because I was famous.’
Subtly lashing out at artists who use their romances as inspiration, he said: “I think that’s an obvious thing to draw from and I’m just not interested in it. And I think maintaining the status quo is something I always like to fight against.
“So the idea of making a record about something that happened to me personally will be about two years old by the time I release it.” I see people doing that too, and it’s not interesting.’

Her eleventh album, The Tortured Poets Department, referenced current boyfriend Travis Kelce, as well as exes Joe and Matty.
The LP’s fiercest song, The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived, caused speculation that the diss track was about Matty catching a fever around the world.
The title is notable considering Matty’s annoyance at his posture, who previously said, “Everyone in.” [the 1975] I’m 6’1″ and I’m 6’1″ so everyone thinks I’m 5’11.’
More recently, he addressed these little man accusations, telling a fan that he was “sick to death of this,” emphasizing that he’s “a big boy.”
The lyrics also refer to a man in a ‘Jehovah’s Witness suit’ and ‘rust my sparkling summer’, with Matty known for wearing striking black suits during live performances.
Other lyrics in the song suggest the unnamed subject of the title ‘tried to buy some pills’, with Matty having spoken openly about his drug problems in the past.
And some fans have also speculated that But Daddy I Love Him – a song about disapproval for a new romantic partner – is also about Matty, and those who disapproved of the relationship that ultimately led to its implosion.
Lead single Fortnight, featuring Post Malone, also seems to take aim at Matty and how their toxic affair ‘ruined my life’.
Following the album’s massive release – which saw it break several sales and streaming records worldwide – Matty broke his silence on it.

When asked by an Entertainment Tonight reporter what he thought of his “diss track,” he politely replied, “I haven’t listened to it much, but I’m sure it’s good.”
Taylor and Matty began a whirlwind romance in April 2023 after they were spotted kissing in New York, with the 1975 frontman becoming a regular backstage presence during her Eras tour.
But a series of controversial episodes from Matty – including comments he made about his use of pornography and allegedly racist remarks on individual podcasts – sparked anger among Swifties, who called on the singer to dump him.
The Bad Blood hitmaker has reportedly dumped him days after kissing a male security guard during a gig in Denmark.
Taylor has since moved on with Kansas City Chiefs star Travis, while Matty got engaged to singer Gabbriette earlier this year.
