Former Rangers star arrested for drink-drive accident in Colombia after ‘crashing into motorcyclist’, who was ‘hospitalised after suffering serious injuries’

A former Rangers star has been arrested and reportedly found to have alcohol in his blood after punching a motorcyclist in Colombia.

Alfredo Morelos reportedly swerved into oncoming traffic to overtake and collided with both a driver and a truck.

Police confirmed they had arrested the Atletico National attacker and that he was ‘driving under the influence of alcohol (degree two)’.

The motorcyclist was hospitalized with broken limbs and blunt force trauma to his abdomen, local media reported via Colombian Broadsheet El Tiempo.

Morelos himself is said to have been unharmed after the crash in his black pickup, as was the driver of the truck. RCN announcements reports that Morelos will have to pay an initial fine of £4,100 and have his driving license confiscated[ended from three to five years.

The crash happened near Jose María Cordova airport, in Rionegro, Antioquia. 

Regional outlet MiOriente reports that the accident happened at around 10am local time on October 23 in an area known as the Gordo curve.

It was also MiOriente who identified the motocyclist as Sebastian Guillermo Davila. He is said to be in a ‘positive’ condition in hospital. 

Morelos spent six seasons at Rangers and left for iconic club Santos at the end of the 2023-23 season. 

He netted 124 goals in 169 games at the Ibrox club and was part of the side that won the Scottish Premiership under Steven Gerrard, also lifting the Scottish Cup and reaching the final of the Europa League. 

The 11-time Colombia international has been on loan in his homeland with Atletico Nacional this year and has hit his stride, with seven goals in 14 appearances. 

He had managed just four goals at Santos and vowed to bring his best form to Colombia.  

‘I will score many goals, play good football – that’s what I did in Europe,’ he said on his arrival.
