Sarah Jessica Parker’s husband Matthew Broderick talks ’embarrassing’ SATC role he rejected
Sarah Jessica Parker’s husband Matthew Broderick has spoken out about the ’embarrassing’ Sex And The City role he turned down.
The longtime showbiz couple married in 1997, a year before Sarah, 59, landed her starring role as Carrie Bradshaw on the beloved HBO sitcom.
Over six seasons, Sex And The City welcomed a wide range of guest stars, ranging from screen heartthrobs Matthew McConaughey and Vince Vaughn to singers Jon Bon Jovi and Alanis Morissette to ballet legend Mikhail Baryshnikov.
However, Matthew, who headed the cast of films such as Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and The Lion King, never ended up with them.
Now he has candidly discussed the reasons why he never guest-starred on the show, in an interview on James Corden’s Sirius XM show This life of mine….

Matthew revealed that he was offered the ’embarrassing’ job of playing a ‘premature ejaculator’ in the series and decided against the role.
“Every time I could do a part, I couldn’t do it, that’s really all that happened,” he said, possibly referring to scheduling conflicts.
‘But sometimes it was also like: “Do you want to be the premature ejaculator for two days?” And I’d be, you know, “Well, I don’t know if I…”, you know? It’s just a bit embarrassing,” he said, as his interviewer burst out laughing.
The “premature ejaculator” was short story writer Vaughn Wysel, who was eventually played by Justin Theroux in the 1999 episode Shortcomings.
Vaughn briefly dates Carrie, who has her doubts about the relationship because of his sexual problem, but finds it difficult to break up because she adores his family, especially his charming mother, played by Valerie Harper.
Matthew expressed his love for Sex And The City, but also hinted that he would rather not interfere in what had become his wife’s domain.
“I wish I had done it or been in it.” You know, that was her thing, and that would hinder me or something. I don’t know,’ he said.
‘It just never worked out. “I loved that show and I would have been really happy with it, but it just never worked out,” Matthew continued.

Although he never guest-starred on Sex And The City, Matthew and Sarah have appeared on stage together more than once since their romance began in 1992.
In 1996, they starred in a revival of Frank Loesser and Abe Burrow’s Pulitzer-winning musical How To Succeed In Business Without Real Trying.
He originally led the cast opposite Megan Mullally before her fame on Will & Grace, and when Megan left the production, Sarah was brought in as her replacement.
In 2022, Matthew and Sarah led a Broadway revival of the Neil Simon comedy Plaza Suite, which they took to London’s West End earlier this year.

Looking back on her long-term relationship with Matthew, Sarah once confessed that they had experienced their ups and downs as a couple.
‘We’ve been together for 20 years and you have good days, you have decent days and you have bad days. That’s a marriage,” she told the Telegraph in 2011.
‘That’s a relationship. That’s even a friendship; relationships outside marriage proceed in the same way. If you are in it for the long term and want meaningful relationships, you go through many different periods.’
