How the Broncos have ALREADY failed new coach Michael Maguire over Ezra Mam’s car crash scandal

Newly appointed Broncos coach Michael Maguire has insisted the welfare of the Uber driver and two passengers involved in the head-on collision with Ezra Mam is paramount, but the club is not supporting him.

It comes as Mam, 21, reportedly failed a roadside drug test on October 18 in Brisbane following the car crash.

The five-eighth would also have been driving without a driver’s license at that time.

“I’m not going to comment on that at the moment,” Maguire told a bevy of reporters on Wednesday when asked whether Mam would be sacked by the NRL club.

“I have to go through everything and assess what’s going on.

‘I will certainly find out how one of our players got to this point.

‘I need to find out more about what the situation is. “I’ve spoken to him and it’s more about the safety of everyone involved in the situation.”

Maguire added that he is acutely aware that ‘the seriousness of the incident is enormous’.

“People get hurt in these situations,” he said. ‘The people involved, we have to take care of them too.’

However, the Uber driver of the car involved in the accident said he did not hear a word from the Broncos.

Driver Marcel van den Camp claimed he ‘blacked out for a while’ and admitted he ‘needed some help to get over the mental hurdles’ after being behind the wheel during the incident.

The mother said her young daughter suffered a broken hip in the collision, and both also suffered seat belt burns.

No charges have been filed in connection with the crash.

‘In a flash there was a truck that hit us. It was a huge crash and I blacked out for a while,” Van Den Camp said Nine news.

“The lady said, ‘I can’t breathe, I can’t breathe,’ and I said holy shit, I gotta do something.

‘I tried the back doors but couldn’t open them, they were locked, so I went back to my door, reached for the back door on my side and unlocked it.

“So I took the girl out, that’s what they were [both] quite shocked to say the least.

“I haven’t heard anything, nothing from the Brisbane Broncos.

“I need some help getting over the mental hurdles I’m experiencing, a little bit of anxiety when I’m in the car.”

On Tuesday, the mother of the child sitting in the back of the Uber spoke about the injuries she and her daughter suffered.

‘She [her daughter] has a broken hip…she [also] has very serious burns from the friction of the seat belt,” she told the newspaper Sydney Morning Herald.

Mom’s management released a statement on Monday saying the star is seeking “immediate professional treatment” at a rehabilitation center.

If Mam is not moved from Red Hill, the Broncos face the prospect of the NRL banning him before the start of the 2025 season.

Maguire is convinced that responsibility is key for Mom.

‘People will make mistakes, but they also have to acknowledge them. That’s the most important thing, if he owns where he is,” he said.

‘His actions in the future are very important. I know he is currently getting help as to where he is. “If he works through that, I’ll spend some time with him.

“He has to go through a process with the police, the game and the (Broncos) themselves… wherever that ends up, we’ll move on with what we have.”
