Former Premier League striker Troy Deeney has claimed he once spent a £250,000 promotional bonus on three days of partying in Las Vegas.

Deeney scored 140 goals in 419 appearances for Watford during eleven spells at the club, after signing for the Hornets in 2010 for an initial fee of £250,000.

The striker, who became club captain, was part of the club’s promotion-winning teams in 2015 and 2021.

Speaking about the Under the Cosh podcastDeeney claimed he promised friends he would spend a promotional bonus to take them to Las Vegas in 2015.

The retired forward said this resulted in a three-day spending binge after he made good on the promise as Watford were promoted to second in the Championship.

“I did a quarter of a million in three and a half days,” Deeney claimed.

“I’d love to tell you it was about gambling, but we made $80,000 at a pool party, $80,000 at MGM in the morning and $60,000 in the evening. In my head, I didn’t get this money because I made the deal with my friends.

‘There were five footballers on a stag party at the time and they were sitting next to me on the table, we ordered the first set of drinks and they came out and as we did that they ordered at the same time.

‘I saw our drinks coming out, about three or four, because we’ve just started and they already have ten, so I said to my friend, ‘They think they can rob me, I just went to the Prem’ , “come here, I have 20”.

“It was all ego, I was a bastard of the highest order, I could use that quarter of a million right now, I’ll tell you.”

Deeney claimed that one evening a “chicken coop of 15 Canadians” was brought to his group of friends.

The former footballer said the group was apparently Victoria Secret models who had questioned whether he was famous after he tried to avoid having his picture taken.

“She says ‘are you famous’ and I say ‘no, no, I’m not famous, I just don’t like pictures,’” Deeney said.

‘She said, “Can you tell your boyfriend to stop taking pictures, I’m a Victoria Secret model and I can’t really be seen like that.”

“I said, ‘I’ll make them stop,’ and she’s gone, ‘just so you know we’re all Victoria’s Secret models.’

“I was like ‘thank you Jesus, I’m in heaven now’, I wasn’t even doing anything that well, I drank so much I got taken away in a taxi.”

After ending his 11-year spell at Watford in 2021, Deeney spent two seasons at his hometown club Birmingham City.

Deeney later joined Forest Green Rovers and had a brief spell as player-manager, while also becoming a regular pundit.
