A major police operation is underway in Sydney’s eastern suburbs after a man was suspected of being armed in his apartment near a high school.

Emergency services responded to Dudley Street, which runs from Randwick to Coogee, shortly after 11am on Tuesday following a ‘concern for welfare’ call.

A police spokesperson described it as an ‘ongoing situation’ and has warned the public to avoid the area.

At least a dozen armed riot police, including one officer with a chainsaw, have surrounded a block of the street.

The block is reportedly not far from a Catholic high school.

The situation is believed to be mental health related and residents are advised to stay indoors.

“Dudley Street Randwick is blocked by police and there are several police vehicles,” wrote one X user.

Another person posted on social media that ‘something major is happening in our Dudley Street, Randwick’.

A NSW Police spokesperson said the operation was motivated by ‘concern for public welfare’.

“Police are speaking to a man within a unit,” the spokesperson added.

‘Specialized police are on site. The public is urged to avoid the area.”
