Hugh Jackman gloats as he scores a major win over fellow Aussie Margot Robbie

Hugh Jackman couldn’t resist a cheeky celebration this week when his latest film scored a big win over Margot Robbie’s Barbie in the US.

The Australian star, 56, posted a headline on social media that read: “Deadpool & Wolverine passes Barbie with $636.3 million at the domestic box office.”

In the photo, Jackman was dressed as Wolverine, complete with his iconic claws and rugged yellow and black costume.

Co-star Ryan Reynolds, in his sleek Deadpool gear, stood grinning next to him as director Shaun Levy beamed at the camera, completing the power trio.

Above the image, Jackman tagged his collaborators, along with the words “Mind = Blown.”

The profane and violent Marvel film has now grossed US$636.3 million (AU$947 million) at the domestic box office, edging out family-friendly Barbie, which is just shy of US$636.2 million.

The subtle jab comes just weeks after the actor announced he would return to his song-and-dance roots for his next Hollywood film.

The hunk will star alongside Kate Hudson in a quirky new musical called Song Sung Blue.

The film is a drama based on the true story of a married couple who rose to fame after forming a band that paid tribute to ’70s superstar Neil Diamond.

Variety reports that the film began production in the US earlier this month.

Jackman and Hudson will play Mike and Claire Sardina, a real-life dating couple Milwaukee who form a double act called Lightning & Thunder.

Claire was known for her impersonation of famous American country superstar Patsy Cline, while her husband Mike wowed fans with his take on hitmaker Diamond.

Although the duo never really made it big outside their hometown, the duo once opened for famous rockers Pearl Jam.
