Footy star who ‘failed drug test’ after head-on collision could have cost himself $4million – as his other alleged offence and a photo of the crash are revealed

  • Mom is also said to have been driving without a driver’s license at the time of the accident
  • Superstar’s $4 million contract with the Broncos is now in jeopardy

New details have emerged after Brisbane star Ezra Mam reportedly failed a roadside drug test following a head-on car crash on Friday evening.

Mom is facing an NRL Integrity Unit investigation following Friday night’s crash in the Brisbane suburb of Bardon after he was stopped by police and taken to hospital for further tests.

The 21-year-old had scans of his head in hospital after suffering a bump in the accident, but was later released and the injury is not believed to be serious.

The injuries to the occupants of the other car are also expected to be minor.

But Mom’s head bump could be the start of the five-eighth’s misery.

The Broncos star underwent an initial roadside drug and alcohol test, reportedly returning a positive result for drugs.

He was then ordered to perform a second drug test using blood samples, with police awaiting the results. Mom hasn’t been charged yet.

It has now also emerged that Mom was driving the vehicle without a driver’s license at the time of the accident.

The courier post reports that the incident has put Mam’s $4 million contract with the Broncos in jeopardy.

The Broncos’ hierarchy will consider a range of disciplinary measures including game suspensions, fines, counseling and education.

“The man was subjected to a roadside drug test which reportedly returned a positive result,” Queensland Police said in a statement.

‘He was held for further examination, which included taking blood samples at hospital.

‘The sample is then sent for analysis. This testing may take several weeks.

‘The tests are carried out independently of the QPS (Queensland Police Service). The QPS cannot comment further while we await the results.

“It will be alleged that the 21-year-old man was not licensed at the time of the incident.”

The Broncos immediately notified the NRL’s integrity unit on Friday evening after their welfare officers visited the scene of the crash.

“Broncos player Ezra Mam was involved in a traffic accident in Brisbane late yesterday,” the Broncos said in a statement.

“He was taken to hospital for treatment for minor injuries and released last night.

“The Broncos notified the NRL Integrity Unit last night. No further comment will be made on the matter at this stage.”

It is the second drama Mam has dealt with since the end of Brisbane’s horror season, after the NRL investigated an interaction between him, Reece Walsh and a fan in Bali last month.

It has already been a turbulent off-season for the Broncos, who parted ways with coach Kevin Walters last month following their collapse from the 2023 grand final to 12th place this year.

Michael Maguire has now been appointed as the club’s new coach and could have done without the latest song.

“I heard about the incident late (Friday night),” Maguire said.

“I don’t want to comment on Ezra because we need to process what happened and understand the situation.

“In any organization, that (good behavior) is part of what builds culture.”

Roadside drug testing has become a real problem for the NRL this season.

Cronulla playmaker Braydon Trindall tested positive for driving with drugs and alcohol in his system in May and missed five matches.

Canterbury flyer Josh Addo-Carr also missed the Bulldogs’ elimination final loss to Manly due to a positive roadside drug test.

Addo-Carr will remain on the outside at Belmore after the test and is expected to be released by the club with an NRL-imposed ban still hanging over his head.
