Footy star Marty Taupau has revealed details of a confrontation where he was racially abused in front of his children on Australia Day.

The shocking incident has seen the evergreen Broncos forward embark on a crusade in a bid to tackle the racial slur.

It also follows Indigenous stars Latrell Mitchell and Cody Walker as they confirm they were targeted by racist ‘fans’ during NRL matches in South Sydney.

Speaking on The Little Fish Podcast, the 255-game NRL veteran recalled being verbally attacked by a fanatic while out with his family.

“I still can’t believe racism still exists to this day,” he said.

“I remember a few years ago, ironically on Australia Day, we had just gotten our puppy and went to the park with the kids.

‘We were having a nice walk and there was another dog who got a little happy with our dog and I said [to the other dog owner] “Can you please take your dog away?”

‘We were going back and forth and I said, “Look, relax, what the fuck is going on?” and she said, “Go back where you came from.”

‘Why would you say that on every day of Australia Day? I will never forget that and it really hurt.

“There were so many things I wanted to do, but what’s the point of responding when your kids and family are there? It doesn’t set a good example.’

Taupau – who has Samoan heritage – added that he has “quite a thick skin” and is not immune to criticism after a long football career – but he was still shocked by the unacceptable slur from a stranger.

After the attack, Taupau and his wife Michelle founded a speakers bureau and talent management agency DSRUPTRS, with the aim of educating people about the profound impact of racism.

Taupau, 34, also stated that he wants to help victims of racist abuse.

“For the people who are being subjected to racist comments, it’s best to surround yourself with good people,” he said.

“It will help you get rid of that hate and you can express it to your safe group.

“I internalize that a lot, but my wife is the safe person for me. You receive messages of support to ease the pain and that can give strength to the next generation.’
