Bathurst 1000 champion Brodie Kostecki has revealed that a member of his Erebus Motorsport team was attacked and hospitalized while celebrating victory at Mount Panorama.

Kostecki fended off red-hot rival Broc Feeney in the six-hour marathon at Mount Panorama on Sunday to win Australia’s biggest domestic motorsport prize.

However, the reigning Supercars champion revealed the win was soured when one of his crew was attacked on Sunday evening.

‘It was a very good evening with the team. Unfortunately, we had an incident where one of our crew members went into the hospital and was attacked,” he told Sunrise on Monday morning.

“But other than that it was a great night for the team, and to get the win with my buddy Todd was great.”

When asked for more details about the incident, Kostecki replied: “One of our crew members was unfortunately attacked last night.

‘It’s quite disappointing and kind of ruins the evening.

‘So we wish Sam all the best and hopefully he makes a speedy recovery, along with his partner Tameika.’

NSW Police have released a statement saying they are following an incident on William St Bathurst that occurred on Monday morning.

Australian motorsport magazine and website Automatic action reports that one of Erebus’ data engineers was attacked as he left a pub.

He was attacked from behind and the phrase ‘f***ing Erebus’ was reportedly used.

“I can’t believe there are people like that in the world,” says Erebus CEO Barry Ryan.

“These young, innocent people were celebrating a lifetime achievement.”

Erebus is also reportedly offering a reward for information that helps track down the attackers involved.

Starting from pole position with co-driver Todd Hazelwood, Kostecki was out of reach before a crash by Matt Payne resulted in the first and only safety car of the race with 28 laps to go.

The 26-year-old proved his mettle against Feeney, teaming up with four-time Bathurst winner Jamie Whincup, in a sprint duel to the finish.

Kostecki won by just 1.35 seconds.

Feeney’s Red Bull teammate and championship leader Will Brown finished third with co-driver Scott Pye.

‘I just can’t believe it. I’m in awe right now,” Kostecki said after the race.

“Broc was breathing down my neck the whole time. It was just balls to the walls the whole time.

‘It’s funny here. If you slow down your pace a little, you might even get into trouble.

“I just knew that if I just did shootout laps every lap, I knew I wouldn’t make a mistake.

“It’s definitely a redemption from last year.”
