Former Wimbledon champion Garbine Muguruza has tied the knot with a fan she met in Central Park while playing at the US Open.

Muguruza officially announced her retirement from the sport in April, with the Spanish-Venezuelan ending her career with two Grand Slam titles.

She triumphed at the French Open in 2016, before claiming the Wimbledon women’s singles title the following year by beating Serena Williams 7-5, 6-0 in straight sets.

Muguruza, who became world number one in 2017, met her future husband Arthur Borges by chance while competing in the 2021 US Open.

“My hotel was close to Central Park and I was bored, so I thought I should go for a walk,” Muguruza explained last year.

‘Suddenly he turns around and says, ‘Good luck at the US Open.’ I just thought, ‘Wow, he’s so handsome.’

Muguruza was ultimately knocked out in the fourth round in New York, but began a romantic relationship with Borges, with the pair taking a selfie together.

The couple met each other by regularly strolling through Central Park.

Borges – a businessman and model – proposed to Muguruza in May last year, with the tennis star sharing the news on Instagram, writing ‘You had me at ‘Hello”.

Born in Spain but living most of his life in Finland, Borges met his wife-to-be while working for Tom Ford in New York.

The couple tied the knot in a ceremony in Marbella, attended by 90 guests from all over the world.

Speaking to Spanish-language publication ¡Hola! Muguruza revealed that her wedding had a Hollywood theme.

‘It’s completely out of a movie. I knew I would marry him even before he asked me,” Muguruza said. ‘When we met it was love at first sight and we quickly realized we were an ideal couple.

‘I was inspired by the golden age of Hollywood, by the dresses worn by Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor, which were elegant, beautiful and flattering.

“Even though he didn’t tell me anything, I imagined Arthur dressing like that because I knew he was going traditional. He looked beautiful.

‘When I saw him at the altar, I thought, “Oh, my husband is so handsome!”‘

Muguruza’s former doubles partner Carla Suarez Navarro and coach Conchita Martinez were among the guests who attended the wedding.

Since retiring from tennis earlier this year, Muguruza was appointed tournament director for the WTA Finals in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
