Bulldogs Matt Burton and Josh Addo-Carr combine to score INSANE last-minute World Cup try

Is this the same Josh Addo-Carr Brad Fittler thought was not good enough for State of Origin?

The Bulldogs winger was at his best this morning in Australia’s 84-0 defeat to Scotland in the Rugby League World Cup with a four-try performance, including an absolute whistleblower who is already being called the try of the tournament.

With the game well and truly frozen, Addo-Carr and his NRL Bulldogs team-mate managed to pull off a party trick for years with BBC Sport calling them ‘The Kangaroo Globetrotters’.

As the clock ticked in Coventry, the kangaroos kicked at Addo-Carr’s wing, but it sailed over his head and seemed destined to cross the sidelines.

Burton, however, lunged for the ball and flung it backwards and into Addo-Carr’s waiting arms.

The winger then fired a quick kick into the in-goal, rushing around his defender and ducking forward for a try that delighted the commentary team.

“Josh Addo-Carr may have just delivered the game of the tournament thus far,” commentator Matt Newsum said.

“But look at Burton’s play, just watch him keep the ball in play, Addo-Carr pick him up and it’s a brilliant, brilliant finish,” added Jonathan Davies.

“Demonstrated his pace, but he wouldn’t have had the chance unless he’d had Burton.”

“What a play that is and then to top it off, a kick and a chase, that will be all over social media tomorrow”

“What a great attempt to cap off a brilliant performance from this Australian side.

Only one option, kick chase and what a finish. Brilliant.’

When asked what was going through his mind at that moment, Addo-Carr said it was just instinct.

‘I don’t know bra, it just went so fast. I just got it out of the hat, I think. It was good,” he said.

But he added that this side of the Kangaroos had made a pact to cement its own legacy and was determined to show no mercy to the lower-ranking nations.

“We wanted to start the game well and I thought we loaded up our energy at the beginning of the game and that allowed us to score a lot of points,” he said.

“It was also from the back of our D. We got stuck on their own side and it set us up for the game I guess.”

‘We wanted to do that. There have been some great Kangaroos sides in the past and for us guys a young team it’s our first time together and we wanted [forge] our own destiny in the Kangaroos jersey.

“I think tonight we set the stage for the Australian team.”

Commentator and York City Knights coach Andrew Henderson was full of praise for both Burton and Addo-Carr, especially given the rain and slump in Coventry.

World class, it’s that simple. The conditions are appalling. This is also a great lesson for the kids out there that you don’t give up a game,” he said.

“Matt Burton, bow, he’s not giving up. He keeps the ball inside, how he managed that in these circumstances is remarkable.”

“And then Addo-Carr collects and the tenacity he shows to get the kick in and just go after it and compete and go ‘I score this try and that’s why I’m the man of the match’.”

And fans who got up early to watch the defeat were equally dazzled.

“Did you see that attempt by Josh Addo-Carr and Matt Burton? Will go down in history as one of the best ever! Proud to be a dog fan today,” one fan wrote.
