A plane crashes on Catalina Island off Southern California coast
LOS ANGELES — A plane crashed Tuesday night on Catalina Island off the coast of Southern California, near the island’s private airport. It was not immediately known if there were any injuries or deaths.
Los Angeles County Fire Department Supervisor Travis White said the plane crashed on the island, located about 25 miles (40 kilometers) offshore south of Los Angeles, around 8:30 p.m. He had no further details, including what type of plane it was.
Detective Lar Meyers of the island’s Avalon Sheriff’s Station said investigators were still en route to the scene near the island’s airport.
The airport is primarily used for general aviation aircraft, including single-engine aircraft, and is known as the Airport in the Sky due to its location at an altitude of 1,602 feet. It has a single runway of 900 meters.
