This means that for the fiscal year ending September 30, there were a total of 2,378,944 encounters. The figure only includes those who were tackled by Border Patrol agents and not countless others who managed to evade capture.

By comparison, there were 192,001 crossings in 2001, 57,674 in 2020, and 52,546 in 2019 when then-President Trump had his own border crossing.

The sheer number of people fleeing failing authoritarian regimes in Venezuela, Nicaragua and Cuba is contributing to an increasing number of migrants attempting to cross the border.

Federal authorities arrested more than 2,493 million immigrants in fiscal year 2022. That far surpassed last year’s record of more than 1.7 million arrests.

Despite the record numbers, the CBP tried to put a positive spin on the numbers by focusing on the large decline in Venezuelans crossing the border.

“While failing regimes in Venezuela, Cuba and Nicaragua continued to drive a new wave of migration across the Western Hemisphere, the number of Venezuelans arriving at the southern border has declined sharply almost every day since we launched additional joint actions with Mexico to reduce irregular migration and create a fairer , to create a more orderly and safer process for people fleeing the humanitarian and economic crisis in their country,” said CBP Commissioner Chris Magnus.

Over the past week, the number of Venezuelans attempting to enter the country has fallen by more than 80 percent from the week prior to the start of the joint enforcement actions. While this early data is not reflected in the latest report, it confirms what we’ve been saying all along: when there is a legal and orderly way to enter the country, individuals will be less likely to put their lives in the hands of smugglers. and trying to cross the border illegally.

“CBP and DHS will continue to work with our partners in the region to address root causes of migration, expand legal pathways, facilitate removals and get thousands of smugglers off the streets. Whatever smugglers say, those who have no legal basis to stay in the country are being removed and people are not allowed to make the perilous journey.”

On Thursday, Arizona revealed how it is refusing to comply with the Biden government’s demand that the state remove double-stack shipping containers placed at the border as a makeshift barrier in an effort to suppress illegal immigration.

The administration of Republican Governor Doug Ducey began placing the shipping containers on the U.S. side of Arizona’s border with Mexico in August — and in a letter last week, the Bureau of Reclamation instructed the state not to place new containers and the delete existing ones.

More than 120 containers have been placed since August to help fill the gaps at the border, says Ducey’s communications director CJ Karamargin told the Washington Examineradding that they are confused as to why it took months for the letter to arrive.

“It has taken the FBI to write a letter since August? If this is an indication of their sense of urgency, it may explain the problem we have,” Karamargin said.

“As for the letter, we question their legal analysis and are reviewing our options,” the Ducey spokesperson added.
