David Moyes has high praise for Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag, despite the Dutchman’s position being under intense scrutiny.

United are off to their worst ever start to a Premier League season and are fourteenth, while Ten Hag also guided them to their lowest result last season.

The pressure continues to mount on Ten Hag to deliver results, with United drawing 0-0 against Aston Villa last time out after throwing away a two-goal lead at Porto in the Europa League.

United will hold a crunch meeting in London on Tuesday, with the Dutchman’s future high on the agenda.

And while he has been criticized by several pundits and fans for his recent work, former United manager David Moyes has praised the 54-year-old, picking out one key attribute that has apparently served him well.

“I think he’s doing a fantastic job,” Moyes, who briefly managed United between 2013 and 2014 after Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement, told BBC Sport. ‘I think he has shown brilliant resilience in the situation he has found himself in and I think he should be credited for how well he has conducted himself.

‘As far as I know, I don’t see him dodging questions or interviews in the media [the media] submitted to him,” he added.

“I think you have to give him all the credit for that, but it’s a job that will bring enormous pressure, people talking, so I have to say I think he’s doing a brilliant job.”

Moyes succeeded Ferguson, but lasted just nine months and 51 games before being relieved of his duties and replaced by Louis van Gaal.

He went on to coach the likes of Sunderland and Real Sociedad, but he has been most synonymous with his time as West Ham boss, having spent two spells in charge between 2017 and 2024.

Although United are now under different off-field leadership in the form of INEOS and Sir Jim Ratcliffe, Moyes knows the pressure that comes with leading United.

Reports on Monday suggested Thomas Tuchel could be lined up as a replacement for Ten Hag should the club look for a change.

Before the Villa match, Ratcliffe was asked if he still backed Ten Hag, but he refused to fully support the Dutchman. “I don’t want to answer that question,” he told BBC Sport.

‘I like Erik. I think he’s a very good coach, but at the end of the day it’s not my job. It is the management team that runs Manchester United that has to decide how best to run the team in many different respects.”
