Musk announced his presence in response to a tweet from Trump, in which he shared the iconic image of him raising his fist with blood on his face after cheating death.

It would be the first time Musk has appeared on stage with Trump at one of his rallies, although he has made no secret of his support for the former president since endorsing him earlier this year.

Trump’s return to Butler, Pennsylvania, had reportedly already raised fears among officials charged with protecting the former president.

He has received a heightened security detail in the months since, and the catastrophic security lapse that led to the Butler shooting led to the resignation of Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle.

The July 13 shooting — which killed one rallygoer and led to the death of the gunman, Thomas Crooks, 20 — was followed last month by a second attempt on Trump’s life in Florida.

In the time since the attempts, USSS spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said the service had made “comprehensive changes and improvements to our communications capabilities, assets and protective operations” around Trump.

Although Musk had teased his support for Trump beforehand, the entrepreneur officially announced his support for Trump in the hours after surviving Butler’s assassination attempt.

Musk said he was impressed by Trump’s spontaneous, “tough” response to a bullet grazing his ear, when he quickly stood up, raised his fist and chanted “fight, fight, fight.”

“I fully support President Trump and hope for his speedy recovery,” Musk tweeted hours after the assassination attempt.

“The martyr lived,” he added in a follow-up post, declaring, “The last time America had such a tough candidate was Theodore Roosevelt.”
