How good is your colour perception? Take the test to see how well you can match different shades

It’s something most of us learn as toddlers.

But a new test makes you question everything you thought you knew about colors.

As the name suggests, The Color Matching Game tasks you with matching different shades.

While this may sound simple, in practice it is surprisingly difficult.

How good is your color perception?

It’s something most of us learn as toddlers. But a new test makes you question everything you thought you knew about colors

The test is the brainchild of Colorlite Lens, a company that develops color vision-enhancing lenses to correct color vision deficiency and color blindness.

You can take the test here.

During each round you will see two colored rectangles on your screen, which you must try to match.

Simply use the slider below the rectangles to adjust the color of the rectangle on the right.

Once you think the two rectangles are the same color, click the ‘Get the next color!’

In the first round of the Easy level, you have to match a bright pink rectangle to a dark blue rectangle

In the first round of the Hard level, the two rectangles will both have very similar shades of the same dark brown

A box at the top of the screen then shows how you did.

It tells you the target shade value, the corresponding color and the difference between the two.

If your color perception is poor the difference between the two will be large, while those with a keen eye may even be able to achieve a perfect score of zero!

There are three levels in the game: easy, medium and hard.

‘You need to match 7 colors to complete a level! (red, orange, yellow, green, turquoise, blue and purple),” Colorlite explained.

‘To get to the next level the average difference must be less than 8!’

As you probably guessed, the colors become increasingly difficult to match as you progress through the game.

For example, in the first round of the Easy level you have to match a bright pink rectangle to a dark blue rectangle.

But in the first round of the Hard level, the two rectangles will both have very similar shades of the same blue-black, making it very difficult to tell them apart.

WHAT IS THE DELBOEUF ILLUSION?

The Delboeuf illusion is a type of visual illusion in which a dot surrounded by a large ring is typically perceived as smaller than a dot of the same size surrounded by a small ring.

This optical trick works because your brain perceives the dot in the context of the outer ring.

It is named after the Belgian philosopher and mathematician Joseph Remi Leopold Delboeuf (1831 – 1896), who created it in 1865.

When it comes to plate size, the theory is that having a smaller plate makes people think they have more food.

However, new research shows that when people are hungry, they can accurately identify the food portion, regardless of how it is served.

According to the researchers, this indicates that hunger stimulates stronger analytical processing that is not so easily fooled by the illusion.

However, it is widely believed that the Delboeuf illusion works in other contexts.
