Man United legend Paul Scholes hits out at Erik ten Hag in near two-minute rant after dire 3-0 defeat by Tottenham

Paul Scholes slammed Manchester United as an ‘uncoached’ team under Erik ten Hag, as the club legend spent almost two minutes blasting their performance after Sunday’s 3-0 defeat to Spurs.

Ten Hag has come under scrutiny again as United were routinely dismantled by Ange Postecoglou’s impressive Spurs side, leaving them 12th in the standings.

A torrid start to the new Premier League season has seen United once again fail to showcase their title credentials, with three uninspiring defeats raising more questions about Ten Hag’s future.

The Dutchman started his third successive campaign as United boss after winning the FA Cup gave him a lifeline to his career and it was expected that another summer of spending would yield an improvement.

INEOS chiefs presented Ten Hag with a recruitment box during the off-season and spent more than £180 million to sign five new first-team players in a show of support for the Dutchman.

Another tough recruitment period means the 53-year-old has now spent more than £600m on new players since joining the club in 2022, but Scholes believes players are looking ‘dead’ under Ten Hag’s management.

“The players looked dead today, they looked flat, they looked like they didn’t know what to do and there was no enthusiasm for the game of football,” Scholes told Optus Sport.

“You don’t know how they’re going to play, how they’re going to approach games, are they going to counter-attack, try to sit deep, try to have all the ball possession? We have no idea.

‘Of course we have to do that [know by know]. They look like an uncoached football team.

“I think whatever happens, happens and he [Ten Hag] just takes it. That’s not it [acceptable] It’s been two and a bit years now and from the first week Postecoglou came in we probably knew what Tottenham were going to do and we still do to this day.

‘We are now two and a bit further and it is an uncoached team and that can only come from the training field.

‘They don’t know what they want. Some of the positions people take on the field are just madness sometimes. Stop hearing excuses, get on the training pitch and find a way to play.

“Just give us something. He [Ten Hag] I really praised Postecoglou for the way they play, why not try something like that?’ Scholes added.

Ten Hag signed a new contract with the club this summer after being backed to move on, but has recorded just two wins in six Premier League matches this season.

Meanwhile, former United striker Michael Owen also joined Scholes in telling the club to stop giving Ten Hag money to spend on inflated transfers.
