England begin WXV 1 defence with crushing victory over USA

England scored nine tries as they started their WXV 1 defense with a 61-21 win over the United States in Vancouver.

The Red Roses, the world’s No. 1 team, took a while to get going at BC Place Stadium before scoring four tries in the first half, two of which went to fullback Ellie Kilnauw.

The USA dug in as captain Kate Zackary scored their third try during the second half before England finished strongly to run out comfortable winners, while winger Bo Westcombe-Evans marked her debut with a try and Zoe Harrison scored 16 points.

England hooker Lark Atkin-Davies had crossed after a lineout in the 11th minute and was soon crossing again as Kil Dunn drove forward from inside her own half and landed under the posts.

The Americans were rewarded for a positive spell on the half hour mark when Alev Kelter collected her own kick before diving to her right and storming clear.

England restored their dominance with two tries in the space of five minutes before half-time through Georgia Brock and captain Alex Matthews.

American center Kelter stormed through for her second try after the break but England responded through Westcombe-Evans. Once again the USA responded, this time through skipper Zackary, but John Mitchell’s side then stepped up a gear when flanker Morwenna Talling crossed for England’s sixth try, before Jess Breach, Kil Dunn and replacement Ella Wyr also touched down.
