Ange Postecoglou has provided an update on Son Heung-min’s fitness after he was forced off in Tottenham’s 3-0 defeat to Qarabag in the Europa League.

The Spurs captain came off 20 minutes from time after Timo Werner received medical attention, moments after his shot was parried into the path of Dominic Solanke for the side’s third goal.

Tottenham play Manchester United on Sunday and with Richarlison and Wilson Odobert already out, Postecoglou does not need an extra body on the treatment table.

Spurs were fine against Qarabag, with Brennan Johnson and Pape Matar Sarr also scoring points, but tensions are mounting after a mediocre start to the competition.

About Son, Postecoglou said: ‘I haven’t spoken to him.

“He said he was feeling a little tired, but I haven’t spoken to him or the medical staff yet.”

Tottenham were down to ten men after seven minutes when Radu Dragusin was shown a straight red card in his first European start.

Dragusin allowed a simple pass from one of his teammates to float past him near the halfway line, allowing Qarabag striker Juninho to steal possession and run freely towards goal.

Unable to catch the Brazilian, Dragusin decided to pull him to the ground instead, leading to an immediate red card from the referee. It was, as fans wrote on X, “diabolical defense.”

Due to Gridlock in London, the match started 38 minutes late as the Azerbaijani visitors got stuck in traffic.

Rail and road closures for various reasons combined to cause chaos for the visiting team and thousands of fans who had to find alternative routes to reach the N17 due to persistent rain.

The TNT Sports team, including experts Peter Crouch and Glenn Hoddle, were also caught and had to abandon their vehicle and walk out into the rain.

‘Imagine being stuck in traffic for more than two and a half hours. I can’t just make excuses for this; it shouldn’t have happened and there was no police to guide us,” said Qarabag boss Gurban Gurbanov.

‘It has had a big impact on our footballers, but it does not detract from our opponent. It’s a good team and we don’t discount that.

“As soon as we arrived, we were told to start in forty minutes, but we weren’t as ready or prepared as we should have been. These things shouldn’t happen.’

Once the match got underway, the home fans were treated to plenty of entertainment, although the hosts only had ten shots to Qarabag’s fourteen.

Johnson opened the scoring after twelve minutes – his third goal in as many games – while Sarr doubled the lead shortly after half-time.

Qarabag had a golden opportunity to halve the deficit on 58 minutes, but Tural Bayramov skied a penalty and Solanke punished them ten minutes later when he took advantage of a poor save from Mateusz Kochalski to poke the ball home.

“It just wasn’t a good start for us,” Postecoglou said. ‘We were very passive with our passing. Whether it was the delay of the game or whatever, but it’s not an excuse.

“So a 35-minute delay, delays warm-ups, delays all kinds of things, but you just have to deal with it and we have to deal with it better than what we did tonight.

‘We shot ourselves in the foot a bit and unfortunately Radu too [Dragusin] paid the ultimate price for it. But as a team we just didn’t start the match the way we wanted and the way we needed to, which made the game challenging for us.

“The response has been absolutely great, but disappointed that we had to be in that position.”
