Vince McMahon breaks his silence on Netflix’s ‘Mr. McMahon’ docuseries

Vince McMahon has spoken out against Netflix’s “misleading” docuseries about his controversial WWE career, ahead of the series’ release.

The documentary, which looks back at McMahon’s controversial career as founder of the famed wrestling promotion, will air on September 25.

A trailer for the series, titled ‘Mr McMahon’, reveals that it will explore the many scandals the 79-year-old billionaire himself has been embroiled in, including recent allegations of human trafficking.

Ahead of the series’ premiere this week, McMahon released a statement condemning producers for using “editing tricks” to mislead viewers and “confusing” the character he once played in WWE with his true self.

“I have no regrets about participating in this Netflix documentary,” he said in the statement. “The producers had the opportunity to tell an objective story about my life and the incredible business I have built, which was filled with equal parts excitement, drama, fun, and a fair amount of controversy and life lessons.

‘Unfortunately, based on an earlier cut I saw, this doc falls short and takes the predictable path of confusing the “Mr. McMahon” character with my true self, Vince. The title and promos alone make that clear.

‘Much has been misinterpreted or omitted altogether in an attempt to deliberately confuse viewers. The producers use typical editing tricks with out of context footage and dated sound bites etc. to distort the viewers’ perception and support a misleading story.

‘In an attempt to support their misleading narrative, the producers are using a lawsuit based on an affair I ended as evidence that I am in fact “Mr. McMahon.”

‘I hope the viewer remains open-minded and realizes that there are two sides to every story.’

Netflix announced the series in late August via an official poster, which said the series “chronicles the rise and fall of WWE’s controversial founder.”

‘Mr. McMahon’ is produced by Tiger King producer Chris Smith and Bill Simmons.

The show would feature interviews with “McMahon before his firing, his family, and some of the most iconic names in wrestling history. As well as the journalists who broke McMahon’s allegations.”

McMahon took over the then World Wrestling Federation (WWF) from his father in 1982, after working as a ring announcer. He later built the sport into an international powerhouse in the entertainment industry.

While in charge, he took the promotion to new heights. Part of his expansion included the acquisition of rivals ECW and WCW in the early 2000s.

The charismatic character would later play an important role behind the scenes, appearing regularly in front of the camera.

He stepped down as executive chairman of the World Wrestling Entertainment brand after allegations of sexual misconduct surfaced in 2022.

A year later, McMahon returned to the newsroom when the UFC partnered with WWE to form TKO, a combat sports and entertainment giant. He took on the role of Executive Chairman of the WWE.

However, in January 2024, McMahon resigned after reports of an alleged sex trafficking scheme first surfaced.

The case remains under investigation, led by former WWE employee Janel Grant.
