Modern Family’s Eric Stonestreet gets candid about scrapped Cam & Mitch spinoff: ‘It felt a little hurtful’

Eric Stonestreet admits he felt hurt when his Modern Family spinoff was canceled by the network.

The 53-year-old Modern Family actor, who recently criticized “fake people” in Hollywood, admitted on the podcast In Depth With Graham Bensinger on Sunday that he and his screen partner Jesse Tyler Ferguson were originally going to have their own show.

‘[Modern Family co-creator] Chris Lloyd and a couple of writers wrote a great script that gave Jesse and me a new twist on our life in Missouri. They said, “No,” he explained.

“They just said, ‘We don’t want to do it,’” he added.

The Emmy winner also indicated that he felt the network cancelled the project because they saw him and Ferguson as “old men.”

The Kansas native said, “I think Jesse and I felt like they saw us as old guys or something, that we weren’t worth keeping those characters alive.”

And although he felt disappointed, he understood that the decision was not in his hands.

“It felt a little painful. But people make business decisions,” Stonestreet said.

However, the actor did admit that if the series had been made, it would have been a hit with viewers.

He shared, “I don’t think it wouldn’t have been successful. Because you had one of the creators — who had really done such a great job of making the show great for so long — who was willing to do it.”

Stonestreet also hinted at a possible Modern Family reunion, admitting that the possibility was already in the works.

“I wish we did a Christmas special, that’s been talked about too,” he said.

Modern Family premiered on ABC on September 23, 2009, and concluded on April 8, 2020. The show was a hit at the time and had consistent ratings.

The series aired for eleven seasons and had no fewer than 250 episodes.

The cast also included Ed O’Neill, Rico Rodriguez, Sofia Vergara, Nolan Gould, Julie Bowen, Ariel Winter, Ty Burrell, Sarah Hyland and Jesse Tyler Ferguson.
