Anthony Albanese hits back at footy great Nathan Brown over post-match act

  • Anthony Albanese says he is ‘absolutely not’ a follower
  • Nathan Brown said he was ‘sickened’ by seeing the Prime Minister in football hangars
  • Albanese says Jeff Kennett can confirm he’s a diehard Hawks fan

Australian Prime Minister and loyal Hawks supporter Anthony Albanese has returned his service to The Footy Show presenter Nathan Brown after the Prime Minister decided to visit the Hawthorn dressing rooms.

Albanese was spotted beaming in the shed after the Hawks defeated the Western Bulldogs in an elimination final earlier this month.

Brown, who currently works as a commentator for Triple M and is one of the presenters of Nine’s Sunday Footy Show, was not at all happy with his presence.

“I feel like the Prime Minister, this was for his own good when he went into the Hawthorn chambers. This makes me sick,” Brown said in a Footy Show segment.

‘Anthony Albanese, he’s been looking at the polls and he thinks Peter Dutton is closing in, he’s ahead, there’s a gap. He thinks, ‘I’ve got to look like a regular guy. I’m going to the Hawthorn chambers.’

“Give it up, Albo, no one believes it.”

The Prime Minister has now responded to Brown, explaining how foolish it would be for him to claim to be a Hawthorn supporter when the successful Swans are doing so well.

“I say to Nathan Brown, mate, if you decide this year, coming from Sydney, not to say you’re a Swans supporter when they’ve been favourites for the flag all year, when the Hawks have started with five losses in a row – that would be a very foolish thing to do,” he said in a segment aired on Sunday morning’s Footy Show.

The Prime Minister said Jeff Kennett could confirm he has been an avid Hawks supporter for decades.

“I joined the Swans when they were part of ‘Save our Swans’ and were in trouble, but I’ve always stayed loyal to the Hawks because you can’t change teams,” he said.

Mr Albanese went on to say that he was “absolutely not” a follower.

This came after Channel 9 personality Tony Jones criticised the Prime Minister for appearing in the sheds with the Hawks during the regular season and singing the team song with the players.

‘He has no interest in AFL. And there he was… he’s got the scarf around him… just go away.’

‘Seriously, when will prime ministers learn to stay on your turf, which is normally the House of Representatives.’
