Woman, 63, apologised to man she had treated as her ‘sex toy’ when he was a teenager in the 1990s – prompting him to report her 30 years later and now she has been convicted

  • Andrea Davey, 63, sexually abused a teenage boy in the 1990s
  • Bradford Crown Court sentenced Davey to three years and four months in prison

A woman who used a teenage boy as a “sex toy” thirty years ago has been convicted of sexual abuse.

Andrea Davey, now 63, had sex with the boy twice and had sexual acts with him a third time in the 1990s.

She was reported to the police after she sought out her victim 30 years later to apologize, telling her victim she wanted to “redeem” herself.

Bradford Crown Court heard how the victim, now an adult, suffered from ‘flashbacks’ because he did not believe the abuse he had suffered was real.

Prosecutor Clare Walsh said Davey had “initiated a conversation” with the victim several years before he reported her to police.

Ms Walsh said: ‘She started a conversation about skeletons in the closet and talked about redeeming herself. She said: ‘I’m really sorry for what I did to you.’

The court heard that Davey told police the boy had initiated sexual contact the first time, but that she had sought him out a second time. She spoke to him ‘as if [he] “was a sex toy,” the court heard.

The victim opened up to his current partner not long after the conversation with Davey, telling close friends and writing her a letter about how he felt. He reported the matter to the police and two days later Davey turned himself in.

Davey reportedly gave a voluntary interview and said there was another time when the boy tried to touch her, but she said “no” and that it was “wrong.” Davey said nothing happened after that.

Davey, from Bradford, pleaded guilty to three charges of indecent assault on a male.

In a victim statement read to the court, the victim said his life had been “devastated” by the abuse.

Ms Walsh said: ‘He said he now believes he has put the abuse away in his mind and that this was the cause of the visions which initially disturbed him. He did not think they were real incidents.

“He said he felt terrible when she told him what she had done and that his life was ruined. He said he would have preferred not to have been told in the first place.”

Harry Crowson, mitigating the sentence, told the court that Davey was addicted to amphetamine at the time of the abuse but she was not under the influence of the drug when she committed the offences.

Addressing Bradford’s Honorary Registrar, Judge Jonathan Rose, he said: ‘You will have read that she has now achieved a level of stability in her life.’

Judge Rose described Davey’s offence as an ‘act of depravity’ and sentenced her to three years and four months in prison.

Judge Rose said: ‘The law rightly prohibits sexual activity with a child. At the time the offences were committed you were addicted to amphetamine. You denied that you were under the influence of the drug at the time of the offences.

‘It was you as an adult who should never have considered engaging in sexual intimacy. He had no idea of what was happening or the wrongness or consequences of sexual activity with you.

‘In the pre-sentance report you admitted that you destroyed his life and your own. Your life since these events has been turbulent. You have suffered violence and have become disabled as a result. You have been free of your addiction for a number of years. You have suffered from mental health problems and to this day you take medication for anxiety.’

The judge said there had been an element of grooming, planning and deliberation on Davey’s part. He told her she would be put on the sex offenders register for life and made her the subject of a Sexual Harm Prevention Order.
