Sophie Turner admits she was ‘swept away’ by emotions while filming tearful scenes in Joan amid her divorce from husband Joe Jonas

Sophie Turner has admitted she was ‘overcome’ with emotion during the filming of Joan on ITV, having just started filming the series during her divorce from Joe Jonas.

Game Of Thrones star Sophie, 28, plays the role of the real Joan ‘The Godmother’ Hannington, now 68, in the six-part crime series Joan.

The series follows Joan’s journey from housewife and mother, to petty offender, to diamond thief and criminal mastermind in 1980s London.

During a press conference about the show, Sophie explained that she had no problem turning on the waterworks: ‘I’m a Pisces, I’m emotional.’

On September 11, it was reported that Sophie and her estranged husband Joe, 35, of the Jonas Brothers, had finally finalized their year-long divorce.

The proceedings were delayed by a fierce conflict between the two over custody arrangements for their children, daughters Willa, four, and Delphine, two.

Sophie went official on Instagram with her boyfriend, aristocrat Peregrine Pearson, on Monday, much to the delight of fans. She married Joe in 2019.

Speaking about her new role as mother Joan, Sophie said: ‘She’s so funny, but she’s also been through so much trauma and is so ambitious.

“There’s so much about her – mother, mistress, liar, thief. It’s just remarkable that it’s all a true story.”

The drama follows Joan as she escapes her abusive husband, but must place her daughter in foster care to help her regain her footing.

With no money and no place to live, she finds a job at a jeweler’s, where she steals her first diamonds.

Her life takes a positive turn when she meets antiques dealer Boisie, played by Harry Potter actor Frank Dillane, who hires her as a partner in crime.

Sophie also spoke about tapping into her emotions: ‘And I’m a mother, so anything to do with children just pours out. I think sometimes when you’re doing a show like this and there’s diamonds and glamour, you get carried away by it.’

“You have to remember that this is to provide a solid and stable life for her daughter, so that she can get her back. And it’s a really heartbreaking story.”

Sophie said of Frank: ‘We actually became really close during this. It was absolutely essential that we had a good relationship and I think artistically I fell in love with Frank a little bit because the way he works is so fascinating. I found myself really relying on him for a lot of the emotional stuff.

Frank says the feeling was mutual. “Sophie is so easy to love,” he says. “I just found it such a joy.”

Sophie spent three weeks listening to Wham, ABC, The Pretenders and Bucks Fizz to get into the 80s character. Author Anna Symon says the drama is based entirely on Joan’s 2002 memoir I Am What I Am.

Joan said: ‘I was fascinated. She’s such a complex and extraordinary woman, vulnerable and strong. She makes some terrible choices but is someone people can identify with.’

Now that she’s stopped stealing, the real Joan Hannington was delighted with Sophie’s portrayal. Speaking at a launch event in London with her son Benny, she said: ‘I’m a bit jealous [of Sophie]she is slimmer and younger.

“They couldn’t have gotten anyone better – so kudos to them. I hope they get the recognition they deserve.”

Joan starts on Sunday 29th September on ITV1 and ITVX
