I was helping a friend feed her horse when I was savagely attacked. My so-called mate didn’t even call an ambulance

A woman is in danger of losing her arm after being thrown around by a strange horse and dumped at home by a so-called friend.

Jacqui Kent’s life was turned upside down in November last year when she reluctantly agreed to help a friend break in her horse on an arable farm on the Mornington Peninsula, south-east of Melbourne.

The friend worked three days a week on the estate and had signed a contract that gave her a discount on stabling her own horse.

Ms Kent told Daily Mail Australia she was struggling with a broken foot when she agreed to help her friend.

Until then, Mrs. Kent claimed that she had only helped with watering her friend’s horses, but this time she asked her to help with laying out blankets.

In what is set to become a summons filed by law firm Arnold Thomas & Becker, Ms. Kent alleges she felt pressured to help despite her protestations about her injured foot.

The experienced horse groomer said she felt a sense of dread when She saw the horse lying with its ears flat on the ground and its teeth coming towards her.

In a response that likely saved her life, Mrs. Kent wrapped herself in the carpet, but the horse grabbed her by the neck and pushed her to the ground.

She was curled up in the fetal position, trying to protect her head.

The gelding picked her up by the shoulder three more times, knocking her to the ground each time.

Mrs Kent claimed she heard her friend screaming during the attack but did not call an ambulance afterwards.

Instead, she dropped her off at home.

“I nearly died. My own quick reaction to protect myself is the reason I’m still alive,” Ms. Kent said.

The next day she called an ambulance herself and later underwent surgery to heal her broken collarbone.

Follow-up operations have resulted in plates and metal were welded to her bones in an attempt to hold them together.

In May, synthetic surgery was performed to put her collarbone back in place and prevent it from popping out.

Mrs Kent must now wait until November to find out whether she will lose her arm.

“There’s nothing surgeons can do right now. If they remove the plates, everything falls apart because it’s held together,” she said.

Mrs. Kent said she never heard from her friend or the owner of the agriturismo again.

“I couldn’t take care of my hair anymore and had to shave it off because it was all tangled on my head,” she said.

‘I have not heard from these women since then and have received no apology or help.

“I will never truly recover from this. I am taking legal action to get justice and an acknowledgement that this was not my fault, and to pay for all the medical expenses and ongoing physical therapy I need to move forward.”

Ms Kent said horse farm owners should know the horses on their property and ensure the person handling them is experienced enough to handle them.

“You need to get insurance for anyone who works with horses on your property so you’re covered,” she said.

“Even people like me, who are born and raised with horses, can get hurt by a horse. This horse had tried to attack people before and they didn’t tell me, there was no warning. If I had known, I would never have gone into the paddock.”

Ciara Smith, an attorney at Arnold Thomas & Becker, who is representing Ms. Kent, said her client… She will struggle with the mental and physical trauma that happened to her for the rest of her life.

“The injuries she sustained continue to cause her daily pain and suffering a year later, and will continue to do so for the rest of her life,” she said.

‘While we understand that animals have minds of their own and can be unpredictable, this incident could have been completely avoided if Jacqui had been aware of the risks associated with this horse entering her paddock.

‘She was not aware that the horse could be dangerous or unpredictable and that she had previously tried to attack people.

‘Incidents like this highlight how important it is for agistment and property owners to ensure they are covered by public liability insurance. People should also not enter into verbal or backdoor agreements – there is no protection in these types of agreements and it is almost impossible to mitigate risk.’

The case is expected to come before the court in the coming weeks.
