PlayStation is launching a limited edition console to celebrate its 30th anniversary – but you’ll have to be quick to get your hands on one

Attention fans of retro gadgets: PlayStation has launched a nostalgic, limited edition console to celebrate the PlayStation’s 30th anniversary!

The retro versions of the PS5 and PS5 Pro have the familiar, all-gray look of the original console.

Additionally, the PlayStation Portal and DualSense controllers have also been given the retro treatment with their own limited edition gray versions.

Gamers will need to be quick to get their hands on them, though, as Sony says only 12,300 Anniversary Edition PS5 Pros will be released.

The news has caused quite a stir online, with one user tweeting: “This hits me so hard in the nostalgia gut. As a console collector I need this.”

Both the PS5 and PS5 Pro will be available in the retro gray of the original PlayStation, while supplies last.

The new consoles feature the original colorful PlayStation icon and an embossed texture of a 30th anniversary logo, which adds a ’30’ to the usual PlayStation symbols.

Each limited edition PS5 Pro will also receive a unique number with a run of 12,300 consoles.

On the inside, however, you’ll find exactly the same hardware as in the regular PS5 and PS5 Pro.

The PS5 and PS5 Pro bundles also include a themed sticker, paper clip, cable ties, and a controller cable designed to mimic the cables from the first PlayStation.

To complement the consoles, Sony has unveiled 30th anniversary versions of the DualSense and DualSense Edge wireless controllers in the same gray color scheme.

These controllers feature the original PlayStation logo and a textured grip that consists of a nearly microscopic imprint of the 30th Anniversary logo.

In addition to Sony’s larger consoles, PlayStation Portal fans can also purchase the portable gaming system in original PlayStation gray.

In a video introducing the products, Hideaki Nishino, CEO of Platform Business Group, Sony Interactive Entertainment, said: “As you know, the original PlayStation debuted in Japan on December 3, 1994.

“We knew that in 2024, to celebrate this milestone of our 30th anniversary, we had to create something that honors the history and joy that PlayStation has brought to us since the 90s.”

Some tech enthusiasts took it a step further and called on Sony to ditch the white color of the new consoles and return to the original colors.

The PS5 Pro console bundle, PlayStation Portal, and DualSense controllers will be available at participating retailers and via PlayStation Network on September 26, and will ship beginning on November 21.

To pre-order the PS5 Digital Edition bundle starting September 26, you’ll need to order directly from PlayStation using a PlayStation Network account. You can also wait until October 10 to pre-order from participating retailers.

Somewhat ominously, Sony hasn’t yet revealed how much these options will cost.

But with the PS5 Pro set to retail for £699 (£699 in the US) and a single DualSense Edge controller retailing for £209.99, gamers should likely brace themselves for a four-figure price tag.

MailOnline has contacted PlayStation for comment on pricing and availability.
