Cops launch rescue operation after body is found down Ellalong mineshaft

A body has been discovered in a disused mine shaft following reports of an incident at the workplace.

Authorities were called to the mine shaft on Dry Creek Road in Ellalong, east of Newcastle in New South Wales, at 12.45pm on Wednesday.

On site, police were informed that a man had fallen into the dismantled mine shaft.

Hunter Valley Police, NSW Fire and Rescue and ambulance crews are currently on scene.

Several emergency vehicles, a mine rescue vehicle and more than a dozen rescuers arrived on Dry Creek Road.

The area has been closed off for the time being.
