An American expat has shared her confusion after visiting a Spotlight store and asking where the pillows were.
Sophia Kim, 30, who moved from Los Angeles to Sydney in 2020, took to her local Spotlight to look for cushion inserts for her sofa, but was sent to all corners of the store after asking confused employees where the “pillows” were.
In a viral TikTok clampthe bikini designer spelled the confusion down to “lost in translation,” but many Aussies were also baffled by the term “stakes,” claiming they didn’t know the term either.

Sophia, who heads Siempre Golden swimwear, said she “walked through the store four times” before asking a staff member where to find the “pillows.”
“I kept asking, ‘Where are the cushions?'” some people at the front of the store would say and then I would ask someone else. I’d say ‘Where are the pillows?’ and they’d say, ‘It’s at the back of the store,'” she explained.
‘Finally I met another employee there who said, ‘Are you talking about pillows or inserts?’ so I was like ‘What’s the difference?’.’
Sophia got lost in the store after asking employees for ‘pillows’ before an employee told her that what she was looking for was actually called ‘inserts’
The Spotlight employee told her that pillows are what you put your head on in bed, while inserts are the pillows that don’t fit on a couch and that’s what Sophia was looking for.
Her video was viewed more than 17,000 times and had many Australians baffled by the term ‘stakes’ in the comments.
‘Never heard of the term inserts in my 37-year life in Sydney….they’re couch cushions??!! pillows for the bed! or pillows to decorate,” wrote a fellow expat.
‘I’m Australian and I thought it was all pillows too. Who tf says inserts? Haha,’ laughed a second viewer.
“Because they can be sold separately (cushion covers/cover inserts),” another replied.
