Troy Aikman opens up on hitting ‘rock bottom’ after second divorce as NFL icon gives rare glimpse into his personal life – and 9pm bedtime!

While Troy Aikman was publicly keeping his life together, he revealed that he had secretly hit rock bottom in the aftermath of his second marriage to Catherine “Capa” Mooty.

The veteran NFL commentator, who rarely spoke about his private life, said in an interview with The Athletics.

“A failure. That was my lowest point,” the Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback said of the marriage.

Aikman and Capa married in a small ceremony in California in September 2017, three months after he proposed during a trip to Lake Como in Italy. The two reportedly dated for a year before the proposal.

Later in the interview, The Athletic cited contentment as the reason for their falling out after they robbed Aikman of his happiness.

Reports of their split came after Aikman’s relationship with Haley Clark became public

“For me, contentment was always a four-letter word. I never wanted to be content,” Aikman said. “I didn’t want to be with someone who was content. That just wasn’t a place I could be.”

Aikman “looked up one day and realized his second marriage was on the rocks,” according to the Athletic.

“The success that everyone saw masked the inner turmoil that no one knew about. Aikman had been struggling with it for decades, fighting against his own happiness, chasing a finish line he’s not even sure exists.”

Now that the divorce is behind us, the Athletic noted how well Aikman is taking care of himself at 57.

Aside from training four days a week, Aikman “hasn’t taken a hot shower in years. He starts each morning with a cold shower and a 20-minute walk in dim sunlight to set his circadian rhythm. He’s in bed by 9 p.m. unless he has a game to cover,” according to The Athletic.

Aikman has two daughters in their 20s — Alexa and Jordan — from his first marriage to former Cowboys publicist Rhonda Worthey. They announced their separation in January 2011 after a decade of marriage.

Meanwhile, Aikman did not announce his split from Capa, admitting he was embarrassed to talk about it years later. Capa still uses Aikman’s last name on her Instagram.

News of Aikman and Capa’s split came after Capa went public with his rumored girlfriend, Haley Clark, in June 2023. Clark, a sales rep for a Dallas-based menswear brand, shared photos with Aikman during a trip to Italy.

The following month, PEOPLE reported that Capa and Aikman had officially divorced.

Capa, co-owner of mobile shopping service Luxeliner, has two sons from her marriage to real estate attorney Jerry Mooty.

The status of Aikman and Clark’s relationship remains unclear.
