Bay Area pizza chain files for bankruptcy – with all locations under threat

The future of a Bay Area pizza chain is in jeopardy after it declares bankruptcy.

Mary’s Pizza Shack, which has been serving customers in the area for 65 years, filed for bankruptcy on Tuesday.

The pizza chain currently has 10 locations, but they are all expected to remain open for the time being.

Documents filed in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of California show the company has an estimated $100,000 to $500,000 in assets, with between 1,000 and 5,000 creditors.

By filing for Chapter 7 bankruptcy, an individual or business can pay off most of their unprotected debts, such as credit card debt, medical bills, and personal loans.

In a Chapter 7 case, the court appoints a trustee to liquidate the debtor’s non-exempt assets and distribute the proceeds to creditors.

The process can offer companies a “fresh start” by erasing eligible debts.

According to a statement from the company, Mary Fazio’s granddaughters will now take over the Sonoma-based brand and the company’s 10 listed locations will remain open.

“This year we celebrate our 65th anniversary and we’re not going anywhere,” the company said in a statement.

“The legendary recipes you grew up with remain the same and gift cards are still accepted and sold at all locations.”

Last year, the company closed three restaurants in Dixon, Napa and Novato, while in 2022, restaurants in Santa Rosa and Sebastopol were forced to close, citing declining sales and rising food and labor costs.

The bankruptcy will see Mary’s Pizza Shack restructured from a single operation into smaller, family-owned restaurants run by third- and fourth-generation owners along with employees, the company said. San Francisco Chronicle.
