Trai and DoT jointly disconnect over 10 million mobile phones

Telecom regulator Trai and the Ministry of Telecom have jointly disconnected over 10 million mobile connections to track nuisance callers and scammers, an official statement said.

The Ministry of Telecommunications has blocked 227,000 mobile phones for their involvement in cybercrime and financial fraud.

“Till date, over 10 million fraudulent mobile connections have been terminated with the help of Sancharsaathi. Further, 227,000 mobile phones have been blocked for involvement in cybercrime/financial fraud,” the statement said.

To tackle the menace of spam calls, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) has directed telecom companies to disconnect and blacklist entities. They have to use mass connections for spam calls, including robocalls and pre-recorded calls.

“Over the past two weeks, more than 350,000 such numbers have been disconnected and 50 entities have been blacklisted. In addition, approximately 350,000 unused and unverified SMS headers and 1.2 million content templates have been blocked,” the statement said.

In addition to these measures, the telecom regulator has published revised quality of service regulations, which will come into effect from October 1, 2024. From April 1, 2025, the QoS performance of mobile services will be monitored monthly instead of quarterly, the statement said.
