Mika Stojsavljevic echoes Heather Watson with US Open junior title
Mika Stojsavljevic sparked British glory at the US Open when she became junior champion. The 15-year-old Londoner defeated Wakana Sonobe 6-4, 6-4 to become the first Briton to win the girls’ tournament in New York since Heather Watson in 2009.
Stojsavljevic followed up her impressive performance in the semi-final, where she knocked out Iva Jovic – the 16-year-old American who reached the second round of the women’s main draw – with another convincing performance.
It came 24 hours after Jack Draper lost the men’s semi-final and it shows the future of British tennis looks bright.
Stojsavljevic took home the win, but Mingge Xu, another British competitor, was defeated in the semi-final, as was Charlie Robertson in the boys’ tournament.
Stojsavljevic said: “I really want to go to Rockefeller Center and see it from above. And then also go to Chipotle or something. I think it’s awesome. I’m super, super happy and thankful for my coaches for this week and my family who supports me at home.
“It was quite nerve-wracking, I had to trust my serve and treat it like any other match. I love fighting, it’s so much fun to compete and play every match. When you win, it’s such an amazing feeling.
“I feel like I handled myself pretty well. I had some tough matches. I lost the first set in the first round, but I stayed as mentally strong as I could.”
