This is the first photo of skipper James Cutfield at home since he was investigated after the sinking of the superyacht Bayesian, which killed seven people.

New Zealander Cutfield, 51, is one of three people being investigated by law enforcement authorities following last month’s tragedy.

He was seen for the first time since flying back to his home in Mallorca on a private jet from Sicily, where the yacht sank, last week.

The £30 million Bayesian vessel, known for its 72-metre aluminium mast, sank on August 19 while anchored near the village of Porticello, near Palermo.

Chief Engineer Tim Parker Eaton, 56, and Matthew Griffiths, 22, are both British and, like the captain, are being investigated for causing a disaster and multiple manslaughter.

Among the dead were British tech billionaire Mike Lynch, 59, and his daughter Hannah, 18, who was due to start a degree at Oxford University later this month.

His wife Angela Bacares, Hannah’s mother, survived and she is listed as the owner of the yacht with an Isle of Man company called Revton.

Both Mr Cutfield and Mr Parker Eaton live on the same road in a sleepy village in Mallorca, half an hour’s drive from the capital Palma, in villas each with a swimming pool.

Mr Cutfield, who injured his leg in the sinking, still had a white bandage on his leg when he left his home in a black Mercedes.

Mr Parker Eaton, originally from Clophill, Bedfordshire, bought his property in 2013, while Mr Cutfield bought it five years later.

Although all three cases are being investigated by the local prosecutor in Termini Imerese, this does not mean that any charges will actually be filed.

Once the investigation is completed and the evidence is presented to them, a magistrate will decide whether the suspects should stand trial.

There were signs of life at the home of Mr Parker Eaton, where he lives with his partner, but no one answered the door. Mr Cutfield also did not respond to attempts to contact him.

New Zealander Cutfield (pictured), 51, is one of three people being investigated by law enforcement authorities following last month’s tragedy.

The men left Sicily last week in a private jet and Mr Cutfield is said to have refused to answer questions, citing his legal rights, but told the coastguard they ‘didn’t see the storm coming’.

Mr Cutfield was a captain on luxury yachts for eight years and had previously worked on and been involved in the construction of such yachts in various locations around the Mediterranean for the past 30 years.

He said that before working for British tech magnate Mike Lynch, he had worked for a Turkish billionaire.

His brother Mark, who lives in New Zealand, said he was a “top sailor” in his youth and raced the 470 in his youth. He married his wife Cristina in Mallorca last year.
