Kansas City Chiefs are hailed for ‘classy move’ with contract of star sidelined by severe PTSD and mental health issues

The Kansas City Chiefs were praised by one of their stars and fans for a “classy” move after placing a player on the non-football injury list on Monday,

Running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire was placed on the NFI list to deal with severe PTSD and mental health issues. Although the LSU product was scheduled to miss four games at the start of the season, the Chiefs decided to keep him on the payroll as he deals with mental health issues.

The organization’s kind gesture caught the attention of a teammate, standout defensive end Chris Jones, who praised the Chiefs on social media.

“Classy move…” Jones wrote on X as other fans flooded the comments with

‘Chiefs are always ahead of the game when it comes to the way they treat their players,’ one user added.

A third user praised the Hunt family for the gesture, to write: ‘Sometimes it’s just right, to do the right thing. Kudos to the Hunt family.’

Edwards-Helaire is entering his fifth season with the reigning Super Bowl Champions. The Chiefs selected him with the 32nd overall pick in 2020, and he quickly established himself as their top running back in his rookie campaign.

Unfortunately, his role diminished with each subsequent season.

In 2023, Edwards-Helaire had a career-low 70 rushes for 223 yards and one touchdown. As a result, he was bumped from the starting job to Isaiah Pacheco, who had 375 carries, 1,765 yards and 12 rushing touchdowns over the previous two seasons.

The Chiefs open their season on September 5 with a game against the Baltimore Ravens at Arrowhead Stadium.
