Paul Scholes has called Manchester United’s worst signing of all time after his former club were thrashed 3-0 by Liverpool on Sunday.

The Red Devils legend, whose glittering career at Old Trafford spanned two decades, won a host of trophies under Sir Alex Ferguson, including 11 Premier League titles, three FA Cups and two Champions Leagues.

During a fan-led debate with former Liverpool star Jamie Carragher and journalist David Ornstein, Scholes revealed who he thinks are the best and worst signings in Manchester United’s history, starting with a lyrical comment on the impact Eric Cantona and Wayne Rooney have had on the club.

The Red Devils were crushed by Arne Slot’s Liverpool at Old Trafford, the latest blot on United’s reputation since Scholes retired from football in 2013.

The disappointing defeat prompted one fan to suggest that Antony is Man United’s worst signing of all time, with the Brazilian once again an unused substitute in Sunday’s defeat and having scored just 11 goals and provided five assists since his ÂŁ85million move from Ajax in 2022.

Scholes provided a different perspective, narrating The Overlap’s Fan Debate, brought to you by Sky Betting: ‘You know, I wanted to go back a little further.

‘(Juan Sebastian) Veron was a good player, a great player in Europe and I don’t know why it didn’t work for him.

‘I’m going back to the goalkeepers, when we had to replace Peter Schmeichel. That will always be difficult.’

‘Fabian Barthez was great, but I think more of (Massimo) Taibi, Mark Bosnich… I thought he was a good goalkeeper at Villa, Mark. He came to us and was so unprofessional. It was ridiculous, to be honest.

‘With shooting practice you normally have 15-20 minutes, after three shots he was completely exhausted. And I never realized he couldn’t kick a football! To be honest, I’d never seen anything like it.

‘We played the first away game of the season against Everton and none of us noticed – he couldn’t reach the halfway line. And there was no wind, it was a perfect day.

“And then you look at his feet… size 14. Honestly, he was just kicking the floor. Disappointment.”

Returning to Antony, he added: ‘But yeah, if you’re talking about the money – and the value for money, then it’s not been good, right? And think about (Alexis) Sanchez as well. Big disappointment from Arsenal.

“My worst? I’ll go for Bosnich,” Scholes concluded.

Carragher joked in response: ‘He’s probably on social media, isn’t he? He’s not going to let that happen!’

“He must have something to say,” Scholes replied approvingly.
