Joey Chestnut defeats Takeru Kobayashi and sets world record with 83 hot dogs eaten in live Netflix special

Joey Chestnut defeated his old rival Takeru Kobayashi in their hot dog eating contest by setting a world record by eating 83 buns and sausages in 10 minutes.

Chestnut broke his own world record by eating seven hot dogs during a one-on-one eating competition in Las Vegas.

It was the first time since 2009 that Kobayashi and Chestnut faced each other in a hot dog eating contest.

This also marked the first year since 2000 that neither man had participated in the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest on July 4 in Brooklyn, New York.

Chestnut did not compete in Nathan’s this year for the first time since 2004 due to his sponsorship with Impossible Foods. Kobayashi and Chestnut did eat beef hot dogs on Netflix.

Kobayashi finished the event with 66 hot dogs eaten, minus one hot dog for not emptying his mouth after a 30-second period following the 10-minute eating round.

The contestants were not allowed to dip their buns or sausages in any liquid. This was a new strategy for Chestnut, which he says led to his new record.

Kobayashi and Chestnut have been competing since 2005, when Chestnut, fresh out of college, entered the competitive eating world.

In 2007, Chestnut defeated Kobayashi for the first time with three hot dogs.

The historic 2008 event saw the time limit to eat as many hot dogs as possible drop from 12 minutes to 10, with Chestnut and Kobayashi tied for an eat-off after 59 hot dogs. Chestnut won with five overtime hot dogs that were eaten in 50 seconds, seven seconds faster than his Japanese rival.

The 2009 hot dog eating contest was the last Independence Day event that pitted Kobayashi and Chestnut against each other. The American drunk won by more than three sausages.

Kobayashi has not competed in the Fourth of July event since 2009 because he did not sign an exclusive contract with Major League Eating, leading to a period where Chestnut dominated.

From 2007 to 2023, Chestnut lost the hot dog eating contest once, in 2015 by two dogs to Matt Stonie.

Kobayashi revealed during the live special that a 1-on-1 competition with Chestnut would be his final eating event.

Chestnut didn’t give any clues about future plans, but it appears he’s not losing his best eating habits.
