Mini halts deliveries of new Cooper and Countryman due to recall

  • BMW Group has already recalled around 80,000 vehicles worldwide due to the problem

Mini has had to delay deliveries of its latest models due to a recall over potentially defective parts.

Orders for the new three- and five-door Cooper and Countryman SUVs have been delayed due to a threatened brake system recall that has already affected parent company BMW.

About 80,000 BMW and Rolls-Royce models have been recalled worldwide due to the same problem, which can cause drivers to lose control of the vehicle.

Mini UK has confirmed that Coach that it has ‘partially’ halted deliveries of Coopers and Countrymans due to concerns about the problem.

It is believed to be the same problem that led to recalls in February for the latest BMW 5 Series and 7 Series, as well as the current generations of the X1, X3, X5, X6, X7 and XM SUVs.

The electric i5 and i7 are also affected, as is Rolls-Royce’s first electric car, the £330,000 Spectre.

The problem has to do with the integrated braking system, which determines the extent to which the driver receives feedback through the brake pedal and how the brake pedal feels.

In the BMW models that have already been recalled, defects were found in the ABS and stability control systems that could potentially lead to failure of the brake booster.

This can cause drivers to lose control of their car.

The problem is said to be related to the integrated braking system, which determines the level of feel and feedback the driver gets through the brake pedal. Drivers could lose control of their car if they are affected by the problem

The new Mini Countryman is also said to be suffering from the same problem. BMW has already recalled 80,000 vehicles worldwide due to this problem.

The BMW Group, which oversees the three brands, said it is temporarily suspending deliveries of new Mini Coopers – including the Convertible – and Countrymans. It may extend the recall “as additional cases have been identified that fall outside the original scope of the recall.”

A Mini spokesperson told Autocar: ‘Some new Mini vehicles, which are affected by the extension of the safety-related recall for the integrated braking system, are currently on hold and will be delivered to customers as soon as the affected parts have been replaced.’

They added: ‘BMW Group UK is in discussions with the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency and will announce the intended corrective actions shortly.

‘Where vehicles are recalled, affected customers in the UK will be informed by letter to the registered owner.’

While existing deliveries have been delayed, order books for Mini remain open.
