Newborn baby rushed to hospital in a critical condition as woman, 25, is put under police guard

Detectives in Victoria are investigating a suspected midnight attack on a newborn baby that has left a woman under police guard in hospital.

The baby was taken to hospital in critical condition early Friday morning after the alarm was raised.

The baby was found at around 2.40am outside an address on Gladstone Road in Dandenong North, 27km south-east of Melbourne’s CBD, with life-threatening injuries.

A 25-year-old woman from a house on that street was also taken to hospital, where she remains under police guard.

The circumstances surrounding the incident are still under investigation.

The incident came just a day after Australia was shocked by an alleged attack on a baby in a Brisbane park.

A woman and her baby were enjoying a picnic at Hanlon Park in Stones Corner on Tuesday afternoon when they were approached by a stranger.

The man is believed to have thrown a thermos of coffee over the boy, causing 60 percent burns on his body, before fleeing.
